Earthwatch - last call for volunteers in Scotland

Earthwatch, the environmental charity with whom we are partnering, is appealing for ocean lovers and sailing enthusiasts to volunteer in the Argyll Island Atlantic Area of the Hebrides, Scotland, at the end of this month.

Volunteers spend 12 days onboard the Silurian, a 21-metre ketch, helping Earthwatch scientists to gather data about the area's abundant marine life. Each day is spent surveying and photographing dolphins and whales and studying their behaviour. This important research will help to determine which parts of Western Scotland should become conservation hotpots.

The 'Whales and Dolphins of the Hebrides' expedition provides participants with the unique opportunity to become crew members, gaining valuable sailing experience while contributing to a critical environmental study. The Silurian will pass sea lochs, towering mountains and medieval cliff-top castles while visiting a variety of island ports, each with its own unique character and steeped in Highland traditions and culture.

"If you love the outdoors and fancy honing your sailing skills while helping to protect the planet, this is a wonderful opportunity," says Ian Allison, Volunteer Coordinator for Earthwatch (Europe). "Without the support of volunteers this research will not happen."
Volunteers live aboard the boat, sharing snug cabins.

All of the cooking will be done on board, and shared between crew and volunteers on a rotating basis. No special skills or knowledge are required to join the team.

The next expedition runs from 29 April – 10 May 2008 and urgently needs support. Volunteer places cost £850, this includes training, food, accommodation, medical emergency evacuation and the offsetting of greenhouse gases. It is also a charitable donation which helps to fund the research.
