Family

Andrew Pindar was born in Scarborough in 1957.  He married Caroline, a civil engineer, in 1986 and they have two children Zoe (born in 1995) and George (born in 1997).

Education

Andrew’s formal education began at Scarborough Boys High School and he later attended the local sixth form college.  In 1976 he went to Leeds Polytechnic Business School.

In 1980 Andrew entered the print business, joining Pindar as an estimator before going on to spend time in both customer service and marketing roles.  His first managerial role was in purchasing, where he learned the difference between value and price – a lesson that has long figured in Pindar’s business strategy.   In 1992 Andrew became Chief Executive and in 1998 Chairman – a position that he holds today.

Pindar

During the last 25 years Pindar has grown extensively.  The family-owned printing company now employs over 1500 people on three different continents, serving thousands of customers in hundreds of locations.  Building on Pindar’s existing position as one of the UKs leading printing specialists, Andrew and his team have developed a strong Pindar brand, with three distinct yet mutually supporting businesses - Pindar Graphics, Pindar Set and AlphaGraphics. They are not just about print.  The businesses work with people and organisations to improve their communication, business  planning, processing, production and management.  Working hard to understand what their customers want and need and addressing those wants and needs now and in the future is a core value that plays an important role in the success of Pindar and its customers.

Interests

Andrew’s printing interests have included sitting on the National Board of Management of the British Printing Industries Federation and a period as Chairman of the Government and Industry Committee of the Federation.  Today he is Chairman of Vision in Print, a forum established for the specific purpose of enabling the transfer of best practice and expertise within the UK printing industry.  Its role is to develop and implement a programme of practical activities to benchmark and improve competitiveness using expert personnel.

Through his work in the British printing industry and occasional guest lecturing Andrew was granted a professorship of the London Institute in the spring of 2001.

The sea has always played an important role in Andrew’s life. Pindar, as a business has become recognised around the world thanks to a series of high profile and innovative sailing sponsorship campaigns designed to promote the highly differentiated business offerings.  His initial involvement with ocean racing started 20 years ago in the sponsorship of the annual North Sea Yacht Race which begins in his home town of Scarborough.  Since then Pindar has continued to enjoy success in sailing with its sponsorship of the yachting heroine Emma Richards.  Pindar’s sponsorship activity in sailing now extends to Olympic hopeful Hannah Mills, and a team in the round the world yacht race – the Global Challenge.

Away from Print

Away from print, Andrew has been a Director of North Yorkshire Training and Enterprise Council, and was a member of the Audit Committee of Hull University.  In July 2004 he was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant for the County of North Yorkshire.  He is also a member of the Merchant Adventurers of the City of York.  In his spare time he likes to sail, ski, play squash, fish and shoot (all at the same time if possible!).
