Environment Standards & Activity

Pindar and AlphaGraphics Inc, including all our franchisees, are committed to continually improve on their environmental activities and will attempt to avoid or control their pollution.

Pindar UK’s two main printing sites now have FSC and PEFC chain of custody certification and AlphaGraphics Inc has FSC certification with the number of US franchisees achieving certification growing weekly.

By using certified paper, our customers can have confidence in the fact that they are using paper from well managed forests and the environmental impact resulting from this paper use are relatively benign upon the forest environment.

Pindar holds the ISO 14001 standard at its Aylesbury and Scarborough sites and we are currently working towards the standard at our Preston site which we aim to achieve by end of 2009.

AlphaGraphics UK and all its franchisees also hold the standard.

Examples of some our environmental initiatives

  • Reductions in waste to landfill has seen our Preston site reduce waste by 50% in 6 months
  • Reductions in transport emissions through:
    • using maximum tonnage vehicles and making up part loads
    • reducing ink deliveries through new ink storage and automatic ink metering systems
    • video conferencing installed at all our sites
  • Recent investment in our presses has helped us to reduce ink, paper and water wastage
    • Closed loop colour control systems help us reduce wastage while achieving greater colour accuracy and consistency
    • Our 10 and 12 colour Heidelberg presses print in one pass and use temperature controlled rollers
    • The integrated afterburner on the Lithoman III short grain press uses evaporated solvent as fuel, reducing gas consumption and emissions to the atmosphere
  • Climate change targets at Scarborough site are currently 0.0817 kWh/m2 nearly 27% higher than BPIF industry target of 0.11184 kWh/m2
  • Establishing a Green Team with environmental champions at each site

However we are very aware that there is still much to do. In the last year we have undertaken an Environmental Audit to assess current environment initiatives, share good practice and highlight opportunities to further develop a sustainable environmental performance across its businesses. We look forward to continuing to make an impact through our five year change management programme.
