Tom Pindar, who has overseen his firm grow into a multi-national leader in its field has been honoureded by the University of Hull. He received an honorary doctorate at the graduation of the University’s Scarborough Campus students today.
Tom is Lifetime President of the Pindar printing and electronic media firm. A family business, it was founded 130 years ago in Scarborough and its head office remains in the town.
Tom took over the business from his father in 1954 and became renowned in the printing industry, recognised as being one of the principal pioneers of photo typesetting and computer-driven phototypesetting. Today, Pindar is the largest privately-owned firm in the industry, with operations in the UK, USA and New Zealand.
The Pindar family were Methodists and committed to self-improvement and the betterment of others, a tradition which continues with both Tom and his father GKG Pindar being made Honorary Freemen. Tom led a national revamp of apprentice and management training in the printing industry. A new rugby playing area is named after him in Scarborough, and he is also a strong supporter of the town’s continuing renaissance.
Tom’s involvement with the University of Hull followed on from his position as Chairman of Governors of the original University College, Scarborough.
