| | | | | | | | WHAT ARE WE TRYING TO DO AND WHY
Pindar is embarking on a far-reaching change management programme launched as 'Respect the Planet', with sustainability at its heart. Environmental management has already become an integral part of the way we do business but we need to move beyond current levels of social action and compliance.
Climate change is the most serious threat facing our planet today. It is an issue which employees, suppliers, customers and key opinion formers can relate and respond to and so should be an integral part of our Corporate Social Responsibility plans.

In November 2007 we were delighted that the Earthwatch Institute agreed to work with us for the next three years to support our environmental change management programme. We are also supporting them in their pioneering Sustainable Oceans programme through our Team Pindar sailing team.
We are currently in the first stage of our programme - auditing our existing activities. The second stage involves us setting out our goals in a Respect the Planet charter and implementing appropriate activities. At the third stage we will review and evaulate our achievements to help us plan and improve future initiatives.
SOME EXAMPLES OF OUR ENVIRONMENTAL INITIATIVES
- Reductions in waste to landfill with Preston reducing waste by 50% in 6 months
- Reductions in transport emissions through:
using maximum tonnage vehicles and making up part loads reducing ink deliveries through new ink storage and automatic ink metering systems video conferencing installed at all our sites saves unnecessary travel
- Recent investment in our presses has helped us to reduce ink, paper and water wastage. Closed loop colour control systems which also helps achieve greater colour accuracy and consistency; 10 and 12 colour Heidelberg presses print in one pass and use temperature controlled rollers; Lithoman III short grain press has an integrated afterburner which reduces gas consumption and emissions to the atmosphere.
- Climate change targets at Scarborough site are currently 0.0817 kWh/m2 nearly 27% higher than BPIF industry target of 0.11184 kWh/m2.
- Establishing our Green Team with environmental champions at each site.
- Working towards 1SO14001 for all our sites (achieved at Aylesbury and Tewkesbury).
- FSC and PEFC chain of custody certification at all our key printing sites.
